The Art Of Prayer

The Art Of Prayer

We all stumble in our closeness and connection with God, yet those who understand how to pray and practice faithfully will not falter for long. At different points in our lives, we all ask the same questions.  Recently, I found myself asking these questions-

Why am I not hearing from God?

I’ve prayed faithfully yet, I don’t know which way to go or where to turn.

Is He even listening?

God is always listening. The problem was – I wasn’t.

prayerSure, I prayed nightly. But often, my prayer was rushed because I was tired from the day and my mind was split, thinking of all the things I had yet to accomplish that day. I’d quickly run through the ever-growing list of things I didn’t understand and ask for His guidance and forgiveness before falling asleep. Then I wondered why I had little to no direction in my life.

The Bible tells us in Proverbs 2:1-5, we are to receive His words and treasure up His commandments. Therein lied part of my problem, I was not treasuring His commandments nor His Word.

I wasn’t bad and I helped others but I didn’t go to church or read the Bible. I definitely didn’t make God a priority in my life.  I was making choices, whether conscious or unconscious, to put other things before God in my life.

Throughout the Bible, God teaches us that immersing ourselves in His Word is what will “incline our heart to understanding.” You see, God was a totally different page than I was.

God was trying to get to me but, because of the decisions I was making – I wasn’t allowing Him to.

When I made the decision to change and seek God in a different way, my life changed. The more I read the bible, listened to spiritual music and focused my life around His message – the more I heard and received God’s message for me and subsequently His blessings and His calling on my life.

In order to do that, I had to let go of a lot of things that I didn’t even realize were standing in between myself and God, learn how to be patient and listen for his response in prayer.

Prayer is a two-way street.

You need to do more listening than talking.
